MY GOALS FOR 2018 – JULY UPDATE

My goals for 2018

Many a Monday has passed without an update on my goals for this year.  I decided that today I would update you on all four of my goals, all at once.

My life became a bit of a runaway train starting in April.  Between our vacation to Disneyland, my implant surgery, my new part-time job (more on that tomorrow), and summer vacation, I just haven’t been able to catch my breath.  So you might be a little bit underwhelmed by my progress on my 2018 goals.

#1 – BECOME A ONCE-A-MONTH GROCERY SHOPPER

Shortly after finishing cancer treatment, as I pulled out a blank notebook for the weekly meal plan and grocery list like I did every Saturday, I had an epiphany. I have gone through so much in an effort to extend my life, why am I spending so much of it in the grocery store?!

This is probably the one goal that is still on my mind quite a bit.  I have gradually increased the time between grocery trips and I am getting close to trying my first month with only going to the grocery store ONCE.  My smaller goal for this month is to experiment with the freezer a little bit more.  I want to try using milk that has been frozen and I want to try roasting frozen vegetables in the oven to see if they are comparable to fresh.  (Oven roasted veggies are my family’s favorite.)  My family has discovered that they don’t mind bagels out of the freezer, but they weren’t too fond of regular bread from the freezer (I didn’t even tell them that it was previously frozen).

Do you use the freezer for things like this? (Milk, bread, etc.)  How does your family respond to it?

#2 – GROW A GARDEN IN TWENTY MINUTES A DAY

I’m going to be totally honest with you.  I have failed this goal.  Big time.  I didn’t realize how far behind I had become in keeping our flower beds weed-free and I have been spending my extra time outside trying to get them back under control.  Add to that my house-painting adventure and I just had to accept that the garden had to be abandoned for this year.  But I’m still going to work on the garden this year.  When things slow down, I will hopefully be able to start prepping things for next year.  Sorry Mel…I failed you!

#3 – KONMARI MY HOUSE

The premise behind this blog is how to save time on the mundane.  I don’t know about you, but one of the mundane things that takes the MOST of my time is tidying up the house, which is basically just moving junk from one spot to another.  So I have been trying the KonMari method of tidying up my house this year.  This is another goal that has been put on the back burner a little bit.  Well, maybe not the back burner, but definitely the middle burner!  I am still decluttering my house as I go, but I haven’t been as deliberate about the actual KonMari process.  We just recently took a whole van load of stuff to the thrift store.  I still have four months to get this done and I’m going to DO it, by golly!  I’m actually going to go to my mom’s house next week and help her declutter.  I will be drawing on some of the ideas from this book (the picture above is a link…check it out!).  But, shhhh!  Don’t tell her that!  🙂

One update I WILL give you on this particular goal is that the folded clothes in my drawer are STILL folded in the same beautiful way and I haven’t had to redo it!  I would have taken another picture but there was no point in doing so; they look the exact same as they did earlier this year!  That trick alone is worth reading the book!

#4 – DITCH THE CANCER WEIGHT

I mentioned in my most recent breast cancer update that my menopausal tummy is stealing the show on my torso.  In addition to that, I looked at pictures from a family reunion and realized that I really need to buckle down and get rid of this weight.

Basically, my efforts so far this year have kept me from GAINING any more weight, but I am still far from where I want to be.  So Mr. Blue Eyes and I recently devised a plan:  We are both going to work toward our goal weight without paying for extra programs, diet shakes, apps, etc.  When we make it, we will use the money we saved to buy ourselves something big!  For some reason, this feels like just the motivation I need!  I’ll keep you posted.

So basically I’ve hit a little bit of a slump with my goals this year.  This is normally when I would abandon ship and say “Oh, well…there’s always next year.”  But not this year!  I’m determined to finish strong!  I’ll keep you posted…
